About this work
This collection brings together three early polonaises published after Chopin’s death. Their dotted rhythms and marching bearing already identify the dance, but the language is more direct than in the great mature polonaises. Their value does not lie in searching backwards for the monument; each piece shows a young composer testing the form.
Keep the first beat firm without hammering it. Upbeats and ornaments need flexibility so that the phrase dances instead of marching on parade. Treat chords as harmonic directions rather than a row of poses. In brilliant passages, retain the bass and phrase proportions so that runs remain connected to the polonaise rhythm.
The three pieces do not share one colour. Contrast them instead of imposing a uniform character on the collection. A prouder articulation may suit one opening, while another needs more song or lightness. Repeats offer a chance to vary nuance, balance, and direction rather than to complete exactly the same lap again.
