About this work
The opening prelude of Op. 28 is built almost entirely from one gesture: arpeggiated chords unfold between the hands while their highest notes trace an upper line. In C major and 2/8, the direction Agitato does not call for an undifferentiated rush. Motion comes from harmonic changes, the impulses of the bass and the way each cell leads towards the next one.
The texture gradually thickens, rises through the register and tightens its tensions before subsiding. Although the figures look similar, their weight and direction change: some open a phrase, while others prepare a high point or resolution. Playing vertically from chord to chord breaks this continuity. Excessive pedal, on the other hand, obscures the harmonic shifts that shape this very short piece.
Begin with only the bass and top note of each group so that the two outer lines can be heard. Add the inner notes without altering that phrasing, then distribute the arpeggios between the hands as one flexible motion. Identify harmonies before introducing pedal and change it often enough to keep bass notes clear. Keep the stretto controlled: tension should culminate in the harmony rather than in hurried fingers.
