Prelude Op. 28 No. 2 creates a deliberately unstable landscape in A minor. In the Lento, the left hand repeats short chord groups whose notes rub against one another and change position gradually. Above them, the right hand enters in widely spaced fragments, often on a single note or very short line. The melody must remain present through its silences without allowing the accompaniment to become an undifferentiated mass.
Tension comes less from a broad dynamic contrast than from harmonic progression. The same left-hand figures take on a different colour with every bass change before dimin, slentando and sostenuto stretch the ending. Dissonances need their full duration: softening them too early or covering them with pedal weakens the carefully constructed unease.
Play the left hand without pedal first, connecting common voices and giving direction to each new bass. Add only the right hand’s arrival notes before restoring its long values and silences. Keep a very slow but measurable pulse until the slentando. Pedal may support selected sustained notes if it changes with the harmony and leaves the friction audible instead of blending it away.
