Prelude Op. 28 No. 7 occupies only sixteen bars, beginning with an upbeat in an Andantino 3/4. In A major, the melody sits at the top of repeated chords and widely spaced bass notes. The older engraving adds the English subtitle The Polish Dance, though the music needs no label beyond its restrained swing. Its main task is to animate the upper note without thickening the supporting voices.
Phrases are short and often symmetrical, yet their returns alter dynamics and harmony. The direction dolce e semplice suggests direct expression; the small central crescendo should grow from the line rather than from a sudden reinforcement of the chords. An appoggiatura and several tied notes delay resolutions slightly, adding flexibility without disturbing the stability of the 3/4 metre.
Play the melody alone with the fingering that will later be used inside the chords, then add only the bass notes. Complete the inner voices at half volume and listen to the length of every top note. Pedal can connect one harmony but should lift before it clouds the next. Keep the same motion through the crescendo and allow the final cadence to settle without excessive slowing: the simple design exposes every added effect.
