Prélude Op. 28 n°20

About this work

Prelude Op. 28 No. 20 compresses its argument into thirteen bars of C minor in 4/4. The Largo proceeds through blocks of full chords supported by a descending bass and an upper line that responds to its inflections. The older engraving adds the subtitle Funeral March. More importantly, the score marks three distinct levels: fortissimo at the opening, piano on the return and finally pianissimo.

These returns are not merely copies played more quietly. At every level, chord length, bass direction and inner tensions remain active. Short ritenuto gestures precede a tempo recoveries before the final cadence suspends the motion. If every note in a chord receives the same weight, the progression becomes opaque; the outer voices must continue to shape the phrase.

Practise the bass and highest note first while preserving the complete written values. Add inner voices with less weight and release the arm after each chord without cutting its resonance. Prepare the next position before its attack. Change the depth of the gesture rather than the tempo for the three dynamic levels. Slowings should remain brief: each creates breathing space and should make the returning pulse clearly perceptible.

What the document containsDocument: The document contains 1 pages in PDF format. A MIDI file also helps locate the continuity and entries. The PDF has 1 page and contains all 13 bars of the C-minor prelude in 4/4, with a Largo direction, ritenuto gestures, returns to tempo and three dynamic levels. Its contrast is unusually weak. The local PDF is an older Mutopia engraving by Magnus Lewis-Smith placed in the public domain. The current Mutopia record preserves a more recent LilyPond revision of this Peters edition. The file preserved by LesPartitions.info can be compared with the reference catalogue. Following that check, LesPartitions.info separates established facts from information that remains incomplete.
