Waltz Op. 64 No. 1 launches in D-flat major and 3/4 under the directions Molto Vivace and leggiero. Its circling motif repeatedly covers the same notes before moving to a new position, while the left hand establishes bass notes and chords. This engraving carries the nickname “Minute Waltz”, but the real task is not setting a record: the circle must remain light without losing the three beats.

After the first returns, a sostenuto episode replaces rapid figures with a broader melody and bass replies. Opening material then comes back with changes of register, running passages and a highly active conclusion. The contrast needs to be clear without making the sections sound like two separate pieces. One waltz pulse connects the light opening, lyrical middle and final run.

Practise the main motif in small circles, using a flexible rotation of the forearm and choosing a clear arrival point. Add the left hand at a reduced tempo, keeping its chords short and first beat stable. In the sostenuto, play melody and bass before completing inner voices. For the conclusion, identify hand positions rather than treating every note separately. A useful speed is one at which the form and its contrasts can still be heard.
