Arabesque n°2

About this work

Debussy’s second Arabesque is an Allegretto scherzando in 2/4. From the opening, very light triplets pass between the hands above discreet supports. Melody often emerges from within this figuration rather than sitting over a separate accompaniment. Playing must therefore reveal both the arabesques’ continuity and the notes directing the phrase.

The file’s six pages are numbered 6 to 11 because they come from an edition containing both Arabesques. Accents, quick shifts, very fine dynamics and changes of register animate the Allegretto. A Meno mosso episode then broadens the movement and gives greater presence to the harmonies before the lively material returns a tempo.

Practise the triplets as their pattern passes between hands without a break. Bring out only their high points, then add bass notes and chords. In the Meno mosso, broaden the pulse without immobilising the phrase and renew pedal with each harmony. Prepare the a-tempo return from the preceding bars so that it feels natural rather than abrupt.
