Pièces mélodiques Op. 149 n°17
About this work
The Rondino, No. 17 of Diabelli’s Op. 149, is an Allegro in D major, in 2/4, for piano duet. The Primo has a high melody with short slurs and detached notes. In the Secondo, right-hand chords rest on a bass that alternates rests with more active movement. The piece returns to its opening motifs after a louder section.
Piano and forte contrasts distinguish the melody’s returns. The forte passage gives more weight to the chords, before piano brings back a lighter texture. The Primo has rising semiquaver figures; the Secondo should support their direction without covering them. A crescendo prepares a shared high point, and the final fermata needs a jointly agreed ending rather than each player releasing separately.
Practise the bass rests before adding the chords. Their lengths must remain intact even when the melody is active. Then coordinate the ends of the Primo’s slurs with the Secondo’s detached notes, agreeing on how to release together. Keep the opening tempo in the semiquaver runs: a louder dynamic should not turn the rising figure into an acceleration.
