The first exercise of Op. 149 immediately establishes the collection’s principle: two pianists make a complete piece, rather than a tune supported by a filler part. In this C-major Andante in 4/4, Primo unfolds a connected phrase while Secondo places repeated chords above a bass that descends and then rises. The apparent simplicity makes differences of touch and poorly coordinated breathing instantly audible.

The form consists of two repeated sections. The upper motif moves mainly by step and returns with small inflections, whereas the bass changes direction more decisively. Secondo’s chords must not become a heavy metronome: they supply harmony and pulse, but the bass keeps a shape of its own. Dynamics move from piano to forte without thickening the texture; the contrast comes first from the presence of the sound and from agreeing on note lengths.

Practise each repeat without pedal and count the ends of slurs aloud. Primo can sing the phrase while Secondo plays only the bass, then the chords can be restored at low volume. Check especially the harmonic changes beneath a held note: if either pianist releases too early, the phrase breaks. This short piece is a useful exercise in horizontal listening at four hands precisely because no virtuosity can conceal the balance among melody, chords and bass.
