Pièces mélodiques Op. 149 n°02
About this work
The marking Andante cantabile asks for more than a slow tempo: both pianists must breathe through a phrase punctuated by appoggiaturas. Primo carries the most visible line, but Secondo answers with connected bass notes and small inner movements. In C major and 4/4, the piece avoids tonal complications so that attention can rest on the motion from an expressive note into its resolution.
Two repeated sections organise several brief replies between piano and forte. Diabelli sometimes changes the bass beneath an almost identical Primo figure, then draws the parts closer together in the final measures. A linking bar gives the lower register more mobile quavers before the phrase returns. The cantabile therefore depends less on generous rubato than on allowing every appoggiatura to reach the next note without stopping the pulse.
Begin at a tempo where ornaments remain sung rather than hurried. Primo can play the line alone while Secondo marks only the bass changes, then the inner voices can be restored. At forte-piano contrasts, change colour without changing speed. Section endings need a shared breath, but not an automatic ritardando. Once both players agree on the length of the phrase, the exercise no longer sounds like a chain of small formulas.
