The G-major Moderato in 3/4 builds its melody from arpeggios that seem to pass between the pianists. Secondo opens with a descending line above a held bass; Primo takes up the same kind of curve in a brighter register. The parts do not retain fixed roles throughout, and this circulation gives the exercise its musical interest.

The repeats alternate connected phrases, forte accents and piano releases. A dolce passage lightens the centre of the piece, then both players tighten their gestures before a diminuendo. Cadences use simple chords, but they must not interrupt the three-beat motion. The line often continues in another voice at the very moment when the phrase might appear to have ended.

Mark every place where the other pianist takes over the direction. Practise those handovers alone, from two bars before to two bars after, matching tone and the length of the final note. Secondo should sustain the bass without covering Primo; a pedal change with each harmony is enough. In diminuendos, reduce the attack while preserving the motion of 3/4, since slowing down would erase the continuity the exercise is designed to build.
