Pièces mélodiques Op. 149 n°12
About this work
In this F-major Andante in 3/4, Secondo does more than place chords: its semiquavers maintain continuous motion beneath Primo’s phrase. Primo sings in broader note values, with appoggiaturas and held notes. The duet’s interest comes from the friction between these two speeds of writing, which must nevertheless inhabit the same pulse.
The repeated sections change dynamics and density several times. A forte draws the parts together in a more assertive gesture, then piano restores transparency. Brief scales and ornaments restart the line before a pianissimo ending. The bass traces directions of its own; if treated as automatic accompaniment, the upper phrase loses part of its momentum.
Let Secondo practise alone with a discreet accent on the first beat of each bar, then remove the accent without losing direction. Primo can then place the appoggiaturas against that regular flow. Rehearse forte passages at medium volume to establish ensemble before adding intensity. In the final pianissimo, semiquavers must remain even and present. Success does not mean making the accompaniment inaudible, but turning it into a stable current beneath the song.
