Pièces mélodiques Op. 149 n°19
About this work
The F-major Allegretto in 2/4 proceeds through short questions and answers. Secondo launches detached chords and isolated bass notes; Primo completes the gesture with a brief line, repeated notes or a cadence. Tiny silences often separate the parts. The character is made there: an answer that arrives too late turns the dialogue into two independent phrases.
The repeats move the same gestures through several registers and multiply piano-forte oppositions. At some points, both players meet in fuller chords; elsewhere, Primo takes a connected figure alone. A late crescendo tightens the texture before the fortissimo conclusion. Progress comes less from a new theme than from the way the exchange gradually becomes denser.
Practise every answer from the other part’s final note. Secondo’s chords should be short but resonant, with a clearly placed bass. Primo keeps repeated notes light so that the 2/4 does not stall. Rehearse contrasts at half volume and establish their synchronisation first. In the final crescendo, increase sound without accelerating. The last cadence will convince when it emerges as the outcome of the dialogue rather than a compulsory fortissimo added at the end.
