About this work

The Hongroise in F major and 2/4 sets Secondo’s sharply defined framework against Primo’s quick ornaments. Chords and bass notes often fall on different parts of the beat, while the upper part combines accents, short grace-note gestures and groups of semiquavers. Its character depends less on speed than on shared punctuation: if both pianists stress everything in the same way, the dance immediately loses its profile.

Two repeated sections shape the piece. The first establishes the rhythmic formulas and their replies; the second widens the register, circulates the figures and strengthens the contrast between piano and forte. Primo frequently plays in octaves and must keep the passagework flexible despite the written fingerings. Secondo alternates short chords, isolated bass notes and chromatic shifts. The rests belong to the rhythm and should not be blurred by generous pedalling.

Begin with only the bass notes and Primo’s accented notes to establish the 2/4 skeleton. Add the chords, then the semiquavers without raising the tempo. Ornaments work best when directed towards an arrival note rather than counted as separate events. In the repeats, listen for the difference between piano replies and forte returns. The piece becomes persuasive when the off-beat writing remains exact yet still sounds spontaneous.
