Pièces mélodiques Op. 149 n°21

About this work

The A-major Andante amoroso in 4/4 assigns sharply different roles to the two pianists. Secondo sustains an almost uninterrupted flow of slurred semiquavers above widely spaced bass notes. Primo answers with a calmer, more spacious chordal phrase. Expression comes from their superimposition: the inner motion must remain continuous, while the upper line needs room to reveal its stresses and the ends of its slurs.

The piece has two repeated sections, each with separate endings. Secondo gradually reshapes its pattern, introduces chromatic inflections and carries several crescendos without disturbing the pulse. Primo alternates held chords, stepwise movement and more compact replies. The dynamics range from piano to forte and then fall to pianissimo before the final fortissimo cadence. This span does not require permanently heavy sound; it creates a trajectory that relaxes before the last chord.

Practise Secondo alone at a tempo where every group of four semiquavers remains even. Primo can then place only the opening beats and cadences before restoring the complete phrase. Agree where the pulse may breathe without losing shape. Pedal should support Primo’s chords without blurring changes in the bass. At the close, keep the pianissimo genuinely light so that the final fortissimo still has a clear purpose.
