Pièces mélodiques Op. 149 n°22
About this work
This A-major Allegretto in 2/4 is built around a short arpeggiated figure passed between the parts. Secondo first states it in the middle register over sustained bass notes; Primo then takes up the same kind of motion above lighter chords. Rests and forte chords regularly interrupt the flow. They provide the piece’s punctuation, provided that they do not turn into heavy stops.
Two repeated sections create a particularly clear design. In the first, arpeggios answer one another in symmetrical groups and lead to a firm cadence. The second varies their pitch, tightens the exchanges and adds parallel motion between the pianists. Piano, crescendo and forte markings identify these changes of function. The closing phrase gradually replaces connected figures with more direct replies before a held chord under a fermata.
Reduce each arpeggio to its first and last notes to check that both parts aim at the same arrivals. Restore the inner notes with settled fingering and a flexible hand movement. Forte chords should be prepared during the preceding rest, never grabbed at the last moment. Finally, give the repeats two distinct levels of sound: the second pass can have stronger direction without becoming faster or harder in attack.
