Pièces mélodiques Op. 149 n°23
About this work
The collection’s second Polonaise is in A major and 3/4. Secondo first defines its profile through repeated chords, a bass note on the first beat and a dotted ending. Primo adds a more connected, sometimes ornamented line while retaining the same dance accents. The task is to preserve the rhythm’s poise without turning every first beat into a heavy emphasis.
The two repeated sections alter the distribution of roles. Secondo briefly leaves its chords for a more mobile broken bass, while Primo develops longer replies and stepwise movement. Piano-forte contrasts and the crescendo in the second half lend breadth to the compact texture. Cadences return to the opening dotted rhythm and remind both players that ornaments must remain within the Polonaise step.
First mark the three beats using only Secondo’s bass notes, then add the chords without extending their resonance. Primo can practise phrase endings by restarting from the following strong beat; this prevents the ornaments from slowing down. Combine the parts at half volume and check the exact placement of dotted figures. In the second repeat, broaden the crescendo through depth of sound rather than acceleration. The final cadence should remain firm and dance-like.
