Pièces mélodiques Op. 149 n°28

About this work

The twenty-eighth and final piece is an Allegro in G major and 4/4. Secondo opens with repeated chords in the middle register and a widely spaced bass; Primo replies with repeated notes, short scales and detached figures. The writing gathers several challenges encountered throughout the collection: shared pulse, handovers between parts, quick contrasts and precise cadences.

Two repeated sections give this finale a compact progression. Opening phrases move between piano and crescendo before a fortissimo tightens the motifs. After the repeat, Primo introduces new runs while Secondo becomes more active. The pianists then meet in related rhythms and carry the final crescendo together. The closing chords are not isolated events; they continue the momentum created by the preceding figures.

Establish the handovers first by playing only the opening note of each motif. Add repeated notes with a short movement and scales with fingering chosen in advance. Secondo needs a present bass that does not cover Primo’s replies. In crescendos, increase the density of sound gradually while preserving tempo. Returning to this last piece after several earlier numbers makes it a useful measure of progress in listening, synchronisation and the sharing of roles.
