Quatuor n°18 en Mi mineur

About this work

Donizetti’s String Quartet No.18 in E minor brings two violins, viola and cello together across four movements. The opening Allegro contrasts an urgent motif with more lyrical replies and frequently redistributes material among all four players.

The Adagio stretches long lines above restrained accompaniment before an incisive Presto with rapid accents. The Allegro giusto finale restores a more contrapuntal energy: imitative entries, collective chords and rhythmic launches drive the conclusion.

Agree on the articulation of the opening motif and the balance of chords. In the Adagio, tune sustained notes before adding vibrato; in fast movements, pass figures on without changing their length as they move between parts.
