After A Dream - Après un rêve
About this work
Après un rêve, the first song in Fauré’s Opus 7, unfolds a deeply connected vocal line above regular piano triplets. Romain Bussine’s poem moves from a vision of love to the shock of awakening, and the music gradually broadens its register with it.
The accompaniment first supports the voice with flexible chords, after which harmony and dynamics become more urgent. The peak at the appeal to night finally falls towards a cadence in which the piano alone extends the last breath.
Speak the text in pulse before joining the two parts. The voice should sustain vowels across long slurs; at the piano, keep triplets even without covering consonants and shape the crescendo across several phrases rather than bar by bar.
