Gabriel Fauré’s Sicilienne, Op. 78 keeps its lilting 6/8 pulse and long singing line in this guitar transcription. The melody needs to project above occasional bass notes and chords that condense the accompaniment. Let the quavers move forward without stressing every beat if the dance-like flow is to remain supple.
Shaping the melody on one guitar
The printed fingerings clarify position changes, barrés and several notes that should continue to ring. Practise the upper voice first, then add the bass while checking its full duration. One hand must carry the melody, support the harmony and prepare each shift, so anticipate a new position instead of interrupting the phrase to find it.
When the opening idea returns, recover its restraint after the broader, louder rises in the middle. Lighten the accompaniment without weakening the pulse. The D.C. al Coda also makes it worth tracing the route before playing the whole page; mark both signposts during your first reading.
