Ave Maria : méditation sur le 1er prélude de Bach
About this work
In Gounod’s Ave Maria, the melody added above Bach’s first prelude forms one long arch. This edition assigns it to solo trumpet: opening phrases remain in the middle register, while their returns gradually broaden the range.
Dynamics move from piano to forte and several impulses rise into the upper register before settling into a quiet conclusion. Rests indicate the principal breaths, but some long phrases require air to be managed well before their peak.
Practise first without vibrato, connecting intervals and stabilising every soft attack. Mark breaths that will fit the accompaniment absent from this document; in the high register, keep the air fast without hardening the embouchure, then support the descent through the cadence.
