About this work

Anitra’s Dance is the third movement of the first Peer Gynt Suite Op.46. Grieg marks it Tempo di mazurka and uses a deliberately light colour: pizzicato strings establish the step while the triangle picks out selected accents without thickening the texture.

The melody passes between sections and acquires small chromatic inflections. Returns alter dynamics and replies, after which the dance recedes with the same economy of means, far from the large orchestra used elsewhere in the suite.

Establish a common pulse before adding rubato. Pizzicatos should retain their spring without shortening phrase endings; the triangle must listen to the strings’ articulation, and each section should prepare its entry from the line it receives.
