La mort d'Ase pour cordes
About this work
The Death of Åse is the second movement of the first Peer Gynt Suite Op.46. Marked Andante doloroso, it entrusts the entire lament to strings: a descending line and repeated chords advance like a restrained procession.
Grieg gradually thickens the doublings and broadens the dynamics towards the central peak. The material then withdraws register by register, and the silences surrounding the closing cadence make the disappearance more affecting than any spectacular effect.
Unify bow speed and note length before seeking a large sound. Bass parts direct the harmony while middle voices determine chordal tuning; preserve enough reserve for the long final diminuendo to remain shaped.
