Stille Nacht - Douce nuit, sainte nuit

About this work

Stille Nacht owes much of its calm to its compound metre. Franz Xaver Gruber’s melody sways above a simple guitar accompaniment, setting words by Joseph Mohr. The music is neither static nor hurried: each phrase moves in two broad beats and comes to rest without collapsing at the end of the line.

For the voice, keep repeated notes light and prepare consonants before the beat so that they do not break the line. The guitar can bring out the bass and the top of each chord without hardening every attack. Begin by speaking one verse in time; the six German stanzas require different stresses even though the melody remains the same.

The balance should remain intimate. A soft dynamic still needs direction, while slowing at every cadence eventually stretches the song beyond its natural breath. Choose a few points of arrival, then allow the other phrase endings simply to settle back into the pulse. Simplicity is remarkably resilient once we stop underlining it.
