Aylesford Pieces No. 11 - Allegro
About this work
The right hand launches a stream of semiquavers in this D minor Allegro, and the left takes up the pattern in the second bar. As the figure changes register, the other hand continues its own line. Follow each new entry of the quick pattern to hear how the exchange works.
The four-beat metre carries semiquaver sequences, detached quavers and chords that briefly interrupt the flow. The two staves sometimes move into the same register. Stem directions help identify the voices at these points; their continuity still needs to come through when the notes lie close together.
Practise the first two bars with particular attention to the transfer between the hands. Keep the underlying pulse steady when quavers replace the semiquavers. At the concluding Adagio, give the chords and fermatas space. The change of pace is written into the score and allows the ending to breathe differently.
