Aylesford Pieces No. 15 - Minuet II (Trio)

About this work

Minuet II, subtitled Trio, opens in F minor in triple metre, marked Tranquillo. Beneath the upper line, the inner voices and bass follow their own paths. A chord may contain several directions at once: bring out the moving note without adding weight to the notes that stay in place.

The repeat covers the first eight bars. After that barline, the music continues to its final cadence without another written repeat. The four-flat key signature provides the framework, while accidentals along the way need careful reading. Stem directions separate the voices when several lines share a staff.

Start with the top line and bass, then add one inner voice at a time. Keep three steady beats as you work: a longer note in one voice should not hold up the others. At cadences, prepare each finger’s movement before bringing the chord together. The final fermata lets the pulse come to rest.

Minuet II edition

Bas Wassink typeset this Trio for Mutopia (164), using Schott (1930) as the stated source. One page with a MIDI companion; public domain according to the project record.
