Aylesford Pieces No. 17 — Allemande
About this work
A semiquaver upbeat opens this Allemande from the Aylesford Pieces. The right-hand line rises and falls over bass notes and accompaniment in the left hand. The Andante marking gives those quick figures a steady walking pace rather than a rush towards the next beat.
Ties prevent each group from becoming a fresh start. Some notes continue to sound as a neighbouring voice moves on. Accidentals need preparation too: look ahead to the altered note, particularly in descending passages.
Begin by connecting the upbeat to the first bass note, then continue to the end of the phrase without shortening held notes. Practise the passage before the double repeat bar separately. Keep the final fragment and the returning upbeat in their proper place in the pulse, with no extra beat between them.
