Aylesford Pieces No. 18 — Passepied

About this work

The Passepied from the Aylesford Pieces begins with an upbeat. Its three-quaver metre, short notes and little descending groups keep the phrase moving. The printed heading adds ‘et Menuet’, but the file contains one continuous piece on a single page.

The right hand combines a moving upper line with accompanying notes. In the left hand, bass notes alternate with closer intervals. The Andantino marking and staccato dots suggest distinct attacks without making every quaver heavy. Use the opposing stem directions to distinguish the two voices, then give the upper line priority.

Practise the first descending group against a steady bass, followed by the group of five marked in the first section. At the double bar, connect the upbeat to the next phrase without inserting a silence. The final fermata appears on both staves and gives room to broaden the last sonority.
