Pièces d'Aylesford n°01 - Ouverture
About this work
This G-minor Overture compresses two sharply contrasting characters into two pages. The 4/4 introduction proceeds through dotted chords, rests and short replies; its accents need weight without bringing the pulse to a standstill. The move to Allegro in 6/8 changes the texture completely, as semiquavers circulate among the voices and create energy that is more contrapuntal than merely brilliant.
In the fast section, figures answer between the hands while the bass retains an independent direction. Each entry should remain identifiable even when several lines overlap. Ornaments, changes of register and cadential chords punctuate the movement without breaking its momentum. A short Adagio at the end closes the piece with sustained chords and fermatas.
Begin with the introduction, separating the exact duration of notes from that of the rests. For the Allegro, group semiquavers into cells and identify the leading voice at every entry. Combine the hands at a tempo that keeps the bass articulate, then increase speed without making the first beat of each 6/8 bar heavy. Prepare the final slowing before the closing chord rather than upon reaching it.
