Pièces d'Aylesford n°02 - Entrée

About this work

The Entrée is a lively G-minor piece in 4/4, launched by a quaver upbeat. Its semiquaver figure moves rapidly between voices and rests on bass lines that define the harmony without becoming a mere accompaniment. Two repeated sections give the page a very clear design, provided that speed is not allowed to turn into haste.

The opening figures progress in sequences, change register and are occasionally interrupted by short chords. The second half develops closer exchanges between the hands before reaching a firm cadence. Articulations and ornaments identify points of emphasis; giving all of them identical weight would make the phrase mechanical and conceal the destination of each figure.

Start by playing only the upbeats and first notes of each bar to establish the framework. Add semiquavers in groups, using supple rotation as they transfer between hands. Keep the repeats during practice: they offer an immediate comparison between two attempts and expose changes of tempo. The final cadence should retain the energy of the Vivace without acquiring extra heaviness.
