Pièces d'Aylesford n°03 - Gavotte
About this work
This G-major Gavotte in 4/4 begins with a crotchet upbeat, a gesture central to its dance character. The upper line proceeds in short figures while the bass alternates detached notes, stepwise motion and replies in the middle register. Allegretto should remain poised: liveliness comes from articulation and movement towards the third beat, not from excessive speed.
The first section establishes the figure and its cadence; the second broadens the journey, passes fragments between voices and introduces more ornaments. Both sections are repeated. Dotted and staccato bass notes lighten the texture, yet the legato upper line needs to continue through these punctuations. The final bars recover the opening balance before a clean last chord.
Play the melody alone first, directing every upbeat towards its arrival. Add the bass without pedal and check that short notes become neither dry nor late. Inner voices can remain quieter as long as their harmonic direction stays audible. Practise ornaments slowly within the pulse, then repeat each section while preserving exactly the same character and speed.
