Pièces d'Aylesford n°04 - Toccata
About this work
The G-minor Toccata in 4/4 is built on an almost continuous stream of semiquavers. This motion never belongs to one hand for long: a figure begins in one register, continues in another and meets sustained notes or bass replies. Allegretto therefore requires exact coordination and a horizontal reading of several simultaneous lines.
The writing proceeds without a general repeat and accumulates imitations towards the cadence. Some voices sustain a note while another continues moving; elsewhere the hands draw close and share the same part of the keyboard. Ornaments and accidentals colour the harmonic tensions. The final fermata is effective only when the preceding flow has remained steady.
Mark every transfer between hands, then practise one voice at a time while holding its full note values. Combine the lines in short segments and hear the bass as an independent route. Light semiquaver articulation prevents fatigue, but the first note of each group still needs direction. Do not slow at every difficult point; choose a common tempo that can be sustained through the final chord.
