About this work

The G-minor Impertinence in 4/4 begins with an upbeat and matches its title through brief gestures, interruptions and immediate replies. The right hand presents ornamented figures while the bass punctuates or takes over part of the motion. Vivace should remain agile and witty; attacks that are too forceful would turn liveliness into stiffness.

Its two repeated sections use the same vocabulary along different harmonic routes. Trills, appoggiaturas and small rapid groups focus attention on particular notes before the phrase moves on almost at once. Rests contribute as much to the dialogue as sounded notes. In the second part, the voices move closer and their exchanges tighten before the fermata cadence.

Practise each upbeat together with its arrival, then add the bass reply. Prepare ornaments slowly with final fingering and place them inside the pulse rather than attaching them afterwards. Keep the rests exact to preserve the bite of each response. On the repeat, a slight change of colour or direction can add interest without altering tempo or overloading the ornaments.
