Pièces d'Aylesford n°07 - Concerto

About this work

The G-major Concerto in 4/4 transfers to the keyboard an alternation between solo impetus and collective support. Across two pages, semiquaver runs pass through the right and then the left hand, while broader chords and bass lines mark the route. Allegro moderato allows the figures to remain exact without reducing the piece to a display of speed.

Material changes register and texture frequently: stepwise lines, arpeggios, repeated notes, triplets or sextuplets and trills follow one another. Some sequences accumulate over a stable bass, while others lead directly to a cadential chord. The challenge is to reveal these different functions. A transitional run should not receive the same weight as an entry or a harmonic climax.

Divide the piece at each change of texture and identify the role of each hand in every passage. Practise runs with temporary grouped accents, then remove them once the motion is even. In wide transfers, prepare the next position before the current group ends. Keep dynamic reserve for cadences and allow trills to join the line instead of slowing the pulse.
