Pièces d'Aylesford n°08 - Prélude

About this work

The D-minor Prelude in 4/4 opens with a long right-hand semiquaver line, soon taken over by the left. This transfer establishes the piece’s principle: motion changes register and hand but must never lose continuity. Allegro moderato leaves enough space for harmonic points of support to be heard beneath the rapid flow.

Across two pages, the figures grow denser and meet sustained voices, active bass lines and ornaments. Some sequences rise by step; others descend while outlining the harmony. When both hands become mobile at once, a hierarchy is essential: one line leads while the other supports or prepares the next entry. The cadence finally gathers the registers into fuller chords.

Practise the semiquavers in one hand while reducing the other line to its principal notes, then reverse the roles. Mark the transfers and listen for equal length between the last note of one group and the first of the next. Prepare ornaments within the motion and with a supple hand. Restrained pedal can support cadences, but the flow and sustained notes should work without it first.
