About this work

The first Minuet is in D minor and 3/8. Its small metre and Andantino marking create supple motion, carried by rapid figures that connect the beats rather than replace them. Upper line and bass often answer at close range. The sense of dance needs to remain present even when the writing becomes more tightly packed.

Both sections are repeated and the second has alternative endings. Figures rise and then return towards the cadence in sequences, with a few ornaments and quick changes of position. The texture alternates between two-part writing and fuller chords. Section endings need real punctuation, but without an added slowing or excessive weight on the last beat.

Treat each group as an upbeat towards the next point of support and count the whole bar rather than every short value. Isolate the alternative endings so the repeats never cause hesitation.
