About this work

The second Minuet, marked Trio, moves to D major and 3/4. Its calm, almost ceremonial character contrasts with the mobility of the preceding number. Chords support a simple upper line while the bass marks the motion regularly. The challenge is not speed but the balance of voices within an often compact texture.

Both repeated sections develop inner movements that connect the chords. Some notes continue from one voice into another and create tensions that should resonate without being exaggerated. The second part broadens the register and moves towards a fuller cadence. If every chord receives equal weight, the 3/4 becomes ponderous and the upper line loses continuity.

Play the outer voices first to hear the route of melody and bass. Then add inner notes with the least pressure needed. Count one broad motion per bar while still sensing all three beats. Repeats offer an opportunity to refine colour: the second reading may be more connected or more restrained, but it should retain the same architecture and pulse.
