About this work

This D-minor Allegro in 4/4 is one of the more extended pages in the set. From the opening, semiquavers circulate above a very active bass and voices imitate one another at close intervals. Motion is built from long sequences rather than small closed phrases, so an overall direction must continue beyond every rapid group.

Across two pages, the hands alternate runs, chords and contrapuntal fragments. Some passages repeat one pattern through several degrees; others bring the voices together in the same register. Breaths are rare, giving extra significance to cadences. In the final bar, an Adagio marking abruptly suspends the momentum and leads to fermata chords.

Identify the destination of each sequence and practise backwards from it so the route never loses purpose. Study the bass alone with its articulations and changes of direction. For semiquavers, alternate rhythmic practice with even playing while keeping the same fingering. Prepare the Adagio across several bars: the final slowing should sound like a conclusion rather than an addition after the race.
