Pièces d'Aylesford n°12 - Menuet

About this work

This D-major Minuet in 3/4 begins with a crotchet upbeat. Its mostly stepwise upper line rests on repeated chords and a detached bass that make the metre immediately clear. Andantino suggests supple walking motion, neither slow nor hurried. Every upbeat should lead towards the following downbeat without acquiring a heavy accent of its own.

The first section is repeated, after which the second develops the figure over a longer route. Passing notes and short rapid groups enliven the chords, while the bass occasionally changes register to prepare a cadence. The writing is clear but needs a real hierarchy of sound: melody should continue through the inner notes without making the accompaniment disappear entirely.

Play the upper line with the bass alone to establish the dance motion. Then add chords quietly and release the hand after each attack. Practise upbeats across pairs of bars so their destination can be heard. On the repeat, keep the same tempo; use a more connected articulation or a slightly different colour to renew the phrase without distorting its structure.
