Pièces d'Aylesford n°13 - Air

About this work

The B-flat-major Air in 3/8 combines a supple line with quavers and semiquavers that pass rapidly between the hands. The bass frequently takes over the direction of a figure instead of merely marking strong beats. Allegretto needs a light, continuous pulse, with a melody that breathes above this activity without becoming rigid.

Both sections are repeated and the last uses alternative endings. Appoggiaturas, trills and chromatic inflections focus expression on a few precise notes. The second part explores a wider register and occasionally tightens the texture before returning to a simple cadence. Ornaments should extend the line rather than interrupt motion or displace the metric accent.

Practise each voice alone according to its slurs, then combine the hands at a tempo that keeps the bass replies audible. Prepare ornaments together with their arrival notes and place them inside the 3/8 pulse. Isolate both endings so the repeat remains fluent. Very short pedal may support some harmonies, but chromatic changes and detached notes need to keep their clarity.
