About this work

The second Minuet, marked Trio, moves to F minor and 3/4 with the direction Tranquillo. Its darker colour comes from both the four-flat key signature and inner lines moving beneath a restrained melody. The bass often proceeds in regular crotchets. This apparent simplicity requires balanced touch so that chords do not conceal the intermediate motion.

Two repeated sections pass the figure among several voices. Tied notes cross bar lines, accidentals briefly inflect the harmony and cadences gather the lines into denser chords. The phrase needs to breathe above the regular pulse. Playing too vertically would stress every beat equally and erase the tensions leading towards each section ending.

Begin with the outer voices, then isolate the inner notes that change from one chord to the next. Add the remaining sounds without increasing overall volume. Practise slowly the ties that cross the bar and avoid restriking sustained notes. Tranquillo does not mean directionless: every phrase should move towards its cadence, with a present but never heavy first beat.
