Pièces d'Aylesford n°16 - Air

About this work

This F-major Air in 4/4 is followed by two variations. The theme, launched by a minim upbeat, presents a simple line supported by chords and a regular bass. The first variation fills the space with semiquavers; the second redistributes motion among the voices. A shared Allegretto needs to preserve the same proportions through all three states.

Each part of the theme is repeated, as are the corresponding sections of the variations. Shorter values add activity without changing points of support or cadences. A few ornaments, quintuplets or sextuplets require particular suppleness, yet remain integrated into the phrase. The second variation makes the bass more mobile and requires several lines to be heard rather than melody plus accompaniment.

Learn the theme first and mark its supports, cadences and the length of its upbeats. In each variation, recover those same landmarks beneath shorter values. Practise irregular groups slowly between their arrival notes, then restore the common pulse. Keep the repeats: they show whether ornamentation remains at the service of the design and whether tempo is accelerating from one variation to the next.
