Pièces d'Aylesford n°17 - Allemande

About this work

The A-minor Allemande in 4/4 begins with a semiquaver upbeat and develops highly mobile writing despite its Andante marking. Lines cross and answer one another through numerous chromatic passing notes. The pulse should remain calm, yet every rapid group has a precise direction towards a longer note, ornament or cadence.

Two repeated sections extend across two pages. The first establishes a dialogue between upper line and bass; the second broadens the sequences, changes register more frequently and draws the voices closer together. Ties and ornaments create local points of support within the flow. Balance changes constantly: the upper line may lead, then bass or middle voice takes the initiative.

Identify voices independently of their staves and choose fingering according to continuity. Practise each section while sustaining longer notes as the other voices move. Chromatic notes require clear articulation at low volume, without jabbing fingers. Keep a regular pulse beneath the semiquavers and retain the repeats: the second attempt offers a chance to direct sequences more clearly without rushing their final bar.
