Pièces d'Aylesford n°18 - Passepied

About this work

The Passepied, also described as a Minuet in the source, is in A major and 3/8 with a quaver upbeat. Its Andantino relies on small rapid groups, bass replies and chords marking the cadences. The bounce comes from movement towards the downbeat; neither every short note nor each main beat should be over-accented.

Two repeated sections present a compact design often shared between the hands. In the second, accidentals and bass movement briefly alter the colour before returning to the home key. Occasional quintuplets and ornaments require the metre to remain perceptible. Rests and detached notes bring air to a texture that could otherwise sound too tightly packed.

First play the upbeat and downbeat of every phrase, then connect those points with the rapid groups. Isolate the bass to hear its replies and changes of direction. Quintuplets need to fit inside the same space as other divisions without pulling the pulse. Practise repeats at the intended tempo and compare their stability; lightness should come from release after the support, not from superficial playing.
