About this work

Haydn wrote Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser, Hob.XXVIa:43, in 1797 for Emperor Francis II. The melody, later used in his String Quartet Op.76 No.3, proceeds in balanced periods and mainly stepwise motion, giving it an immediately memorable stability.

This document isolates the principal line and places chord symbols above the staff. It is therefore a melodic and harmonic lead sheet, not the quartet score or a fully realised keyboard or choral arrangement.

First project the four-bar span without stressing every beat. If adding an accompaniment, keep chords simple and prepare cadences from the supplied symbols; the final note of each phrase should remain supported through its resolution.
