Quatuor Op. 76 n°2 en Ré mineur

About this work

String Quartet Op. 76 No. 2 in D minor is known as the Fifths because of the descending motif that governs its opening Allegro. Haydn circulates, fragments and superimposes it until it acts as theme, accompaniment and signal of transition at once.

The Andante brings a clearer breath, but the Menuetto restores austere tension through canonic writing. Its Trio briefly changes colour before a Vivace assai finale contrasts minor-key urgency with more dance-like clearings.

Secure the tuning of the fifth motif in every position and agree on its length. The Menuetto’s canon needs an unwavering pulse; in the finale, keep runs light so that changes of mode and exchanges remain audible.
