Quatuor Op. 76 n°3 en Do majeur

About this work

String Quartet Op. 76 No. 3 in C major, the Emperor, begins with a broad Allegro that moves its motifs between assertive tutti and lighter conversation. Its centre of gravity is the Poco adagio cantabile, built on the hymn Haydn had composed for Emperor Francis II.

Four slow-movement variations entrust the melody in turn to each instrument while continually renewing the accompaniment. The Menuetto restores a sturdy frame, and the Presto finale starts in C minor before winning back the brightness of the major key.

In the variations, tune the principal line as though it belonged to one instrument despite each handover. Lighten accompanying voices without making them passive; in the finale, keep dotted rhythm precise so the move from minor to major retains its effect.
