String Quartet Op. 76 No. 4 in B-flat major owes its Sunrise nickname to its opening: the first violin draws an ascending line above a chord sustained by the other three instruments. The Allegro con spirito develops this contrast between suspended space and collective motion.

The Adagio deepens the play of long lines and modulation before the Menuetto restores firm points of support. The Allegro ma non troppo finale begins lightly, gradually tightens its exchanges and drives the quartet towards a much faster conclusion.

At the opening, the three sustained parts should form one colour beneath the first violin. Prepare harmonic changes together without swelling every note; in the finale, keep articulation short and the pulse flexible enough for the coda’s acceleration.
