Quatuor Op. 76 n°6 en Mib majeur

About this work

String Quartet Op. 76 No. 6 in E-flat major begins with an Allegretto that immediately transforms its theme before the Allegro. This opening avoids a conventional exposition: all four instruments build the movement by continually reinterpreting the same contours.

The second movement is titled Fantasia and crosses remote keys in an Adagio of suspended phrases. A Presto Menuetto contrasts more earthy gestures with its Trio, and the Allegro spiritoso finale combines counterpoint, syncopation and virtuoso impulses.

Identify transformations of the opening theme and retain the same articulation when it changes voice. In the Fantasia, listen to the bass before adjusting each chord; for the final two movements, practise syncopations with a shared beat and short bow strokes.
